BMW repair is one of our specialties at Perfection Auto Works. We see a lot of BMW’s so it is almost second nature when it comes to diagnosing the problems that can crop up with the various models. Today we will focus on the BMW 3 Series.
The 3 series is the most popular model from BMW. It combines the benefits of a premium automobile with great driving dynamics. Like every car, there are some common things to watch out for. They include minor engine issues, cooling system problems and the electrical system can act up. Cooling system issues in particular need attention because without a fully functional cooling system, the engine may overheat resulting in very expensive repairs. We live in Tucson so this is important to keep an eye on.
If you are thinking about purchasing an used BMW from a private party, coordinate an inspection between us and the current owner before you settle on a price.
3 Series Engine Issues
Until recently, most BMW 3 series cars came with a 3.0 liter inline 6 cylinder engine. For the most part, these are workhorse engines that don’t encounter many problems. In my opinion, this is the best part about the car. Newer models are using turbo charged 4 and 6 cylinder engines to meet fuel economy regulations. Regardless of which engine your car has, we can help you with your BMW repairs from basic oil changes to more serious problems.
Regular maintenance to change out gaskets on the oil pan and manifold can prevent oil leaks from happening. The engine timing belt or chain (depending on the model) is also something that may require maintenance if you are reaching around 100k miles.
While not directly a part of the engine, we also see failures of the fuel pumps and fuel injectors as common problems. Our fuel injector service can prolong the life of your injectors.
3 Series Cooling System Problems
The cooling system is perhaps the most vulnerable set of components on your BMW. Common issues include coolant leaks and water pumps that stop working. Every 30k miles is a good point to replace the water pump, thermostat, and thermostat housing. The consequences of an overheated engine could spell head gasket repairs or replacement of your cylinder heads. Two things you definitely don’t want to happen.
Of course, being in the Tucson desert, checking your hoses twice a year is a good thing to do. We recommend a full replacement at 10 years or 100k miles even if they look okay on the outside. A broken hose will disable your car from running.
3 Series Electrical Problems
BMW electrical system problems are another familiar trouble. The technology in these cars require multiple control modules and electronic devices. Just like your home computer or cell phone, your car’s computers can throw “faults”. We have the right tools to read your car’s computer codes to make the correct repair.
We love BMW’s and own several of them here at the shop because they are great in many ways. Good maintenance practices and catching things early is the best way to get a long life out of your car.
